24 hours est une fiction inspirée par les journaux intimes de Qiu Miao-jin(1969-1995), écrivaine reconnue de la littérature homosexuelle taïwanaise. Elle vécut à Paris jusqu'en 1995 où elle se suicida à l’âge de 26 ans. Sans faire le choix de l’adaptation ni de la biographie, un des enjeux du projet est d’expérimenter l’écriture, à travers des textes découpés et réarrangés. Le film se déroule sous la forme d’un huis clos dépeignant les dernières 24 heures de Mai, une jeune écrivaine Taïwanaise expatriée. Elle s’enferme dans son appartement pour rédiger le dernier chapitre de son roman, le testament. En tant que narrateur et personnage, l’auteur tente de dialoguer avec Qiu qui fait partie des intellectuels de la génération ayant évolués après la loi martiale imposé dans son pays natal.

Inspired by the diaries left by Qiu Miaojin (1969–1995), Taiwan’s most renowned lesbian writer, the story begins with twenty four hours in the life of Mai, a young expatriate writer. She shuts herself in her apartment while writing the last chapter of her novel Last Words.
Without adapting the scenes from Qiu’s texts, the director cut her words into pieces and rearranged them in a new context for internal monologue. Deeply moved by the intimacy and the sincerity of Qiu’s writing, the director interpreted the main character to be able to meet the writer in the cinema. This film is also the homage to both personnel and historical terms for the late 90’s post martial low period of director’s motherland.
The texts of the voice-over are extracts from Qiu Miao-jin’s diaries(1989-1995) and last words from Montmartre(1996), the works of Qiu Miao-jin (1969-1995), one of the most innovative modernists in Taiwanese queer literature. She had pursued graduate studies in clinical psychology at the University of Paris VIII. In 1995, she committed suicide in Paris at the age of 26.
